Polly Crosby (Harper Collins: 2024)

Following our event with Polly Crosby back in November I made sure to add all of her work to my future TBR (to be read pile) and I am very glad that I did! Crosby is a powerhouse of a writer, having now written six books across many genres and age ranges, solidifying her as a staple for all readers.

Having a vested interest in the Victorian era and the tuberculosis epidemic, Crosby’s latest novel for adults The House of Fever was the perfect read for me. Full of mystery and intrigue, I could not put this book down.

The story follows Agnes Templeton as she marries Christian, the doctor in charge of Hedoné House, a luxurious sanatorium for tuberculosis patients. But as Agnes grows closer to the staff and patients she finds there is more than meets the eye to her husband’s practices.

Crosby’s storytelling is so compelling. From the first page I was immersed in the 1930s and the life of Agnes, an honest and caring protagonist who you can’t help but root for. The setting of the Hedoné House is equally alluring, possessing an almost magical quality for both its characters and the reader.

I had high expectations going into this novel and I am so pleased to say they were both met and surpassed! This might be my favourite Polly Crosby book yet.
