I thoroughly enjoyed the slasher atmosphere that is present throughout this book, which was heightened by the choice of music I listened to whilst reading it (Friday the 13th-esque sound rooms on YouTube!)

I completely devoured this book (or did it devour me?) and how it was wrapped up. I am a huge fan of horror movies and books, so this is right up my alley. Josh enriches the piece with references to horror flicks and stories and  includes slasher stereotypes and cliches as well as critiquing them.

Another incredible addition was the characterisation and representation of different identities, and how they fit into this book. Discussions of sexuality, identity, and judgement all fit greatly into this book all about ‘cancel culture’ and feeling socially ostracised.

As it says in the story itself, horror is honest; it allows the space to carve into topics and execute them in ways that other genres can’t (puns fully intended!) in a wider and darker way.

I have a personalised signed copy from Josh as well, so that makes it even more special!

Overall, this is the perfect read to pick up in the autumnal months, especially near spooky season, or if you celebrate Summerween (a week in the summer where you celebrate typically Halloween-associated activities). Especially as this is a summer camp slasher, it is well suited to both times of the year!
